Three Things You Must Do Before You Submit To Article Directories

To all writers and non-writers out there, now is the time to start digging up those creative writing skills. With modern communication technology comes the popularity of information-based marketing, which is one of the oldest and most effective techniques in getting targeted prospects to sites and converting them into buyers. Your link profile is potentially the most powerful aspect of your SEO efforts, especially in the eyes of Google. Quality counts over quantity, but it is important to get a good list of well-balanced links pointing to your site. Diversification really is the key. Try not to concentrate all of your efforts on gaining links from one source, and similarly try not to gain them using a single method. A number of tactics should be avoided wherever possible because they either offer you no benefit whatsoever or your page may be penalized.

This article looks at the acquisition of links purely from an SEO standpoint and, aside from the really bad linking methods, if a link will provide good-quality, direct traffic then it is definitely still a good link and well worth considering. You will have to use your judgment on this, to a certain extent.

Good Links

Directory Links

Directories are viewed as being a very positive source of links by a number of search engines. Obviously, some directory listings carry much more weight than others and some directories are hardly worth the effort. Be careful to drip feed your site with directory links at first because it is possible that too many too quickly will see your site penalized until your link profile becomes more natural.

Start with the major Internet directories and consider getting links from free general topic directories as well as niche directories and also look at paying for inclusion in one or two of the seriously large directories like the Yahoo directory and business.com. As your link profile expands you can add more directories to gain extra weight.

Reciprocal Links

You may have read that reciprocal linking is dead. While it is true that Google and possibly other search engines now place much less weight on a profile that is crammed with nothing but reciprocal links they still have a place. Keep the number of reciprocal links you use down to a minimum and certainly don't base your entire link building efforts on this one tactic alone.

Again, balance is a big part of reciprocal linking but also of importance is relevance. Regardless of whether you offer a separate links or resources page, or you choose to include the links throughout your site you are still essentially endorsing the site. You will also gain much more credence from a link that is placed on a page containing information relevant to your own page.

Unique One-Way Inbound Links

These should pretty much be the staple diet of your link portfolio. An inbound link that is one way does not necessitate the inclusion of a link back to that page on your site. This can help to give your own pages the benefit instead of handing it out to your link partners. The more relevant and the more important that search engines deem the linking site to be the more weight they give that particular link.

Site Wide Links

Again, these should be used sparingly. Gaining a site wide link means that a link to your site or your pages is placed on a number of pages in a site. Search engines are known to give less weight to links that are procured on this basis but it does help to give your portfolio a more rounded appearance.

Press Release Links

Writing and submitting a digital press release can provide good links. Many press releases are used by other sites and industries related to your site and they may also be included on some major news websites. There are free press release distribution services available, but it is common to need t pay to make the link clickable and to use anchor text.

Article Links

Writing and submitting articles to article directories can provide a large number of links. Not only can you submit one article to numerous directories but each directory has the potential of generating a number of interested websites. These websites also publish your article (which includes an author bio section with your link). This can be a good way to get authoritative sites to link to you.

Community Links

Join forums and include your link in your signature. Post useful comments on other people's blogs and include your link as your username. You should, under no circumstances, spam blogs or forums and only include links on the sites that allow it.

Presell Advertising Pages

Some websites will allow you to include an entire page on their site. In most cases you will either need to pay to have the page written or you, or write the page yourself. Generally the website will also include other forms of advertising but as long as you choose sites carefully this can generate some excellent links.

Bad Links

FFA Sites

An FFA, or Free-For-All page, is one that allows anybody to post any link they like on the page. Typically they are not only useless to your cause, because the search engines ignore them, but they will not generate any natural traffic but may attract the spammers to your doors.

Link Farms

A link farm is a page that contains an excessively large number of links. Some say a page with 100 links directed out of that page is a link farm, but in all honesty it is unlikely that a page will yield much benefit for SEO or non-SEO with more than fifty or so links.

Off Topic

Off topic links are something of a bone of contention. They may offer very slight weight with some search engines because it is quite possible that natural links from certain websites would point to any number of pages on any topic. This appears in the bad link section because they offer very little positive benefit and your efforts would be best placed gaining on-topic links.

Unindexable

Purely from an SEO standpoint, links that cannot be indexed by search engines are completely useless. A search engine spider must be able to follow the link to find your page and provide you with any benefit for that link. Avoid any page that offers to display your link in a frame, or includes the noindex or nofollow robots.txt tags. However, bear in mind that a site that is currently not being indexed by search engines may be a new site. It could also grow up to be the next Google.com and take your link with it.

Conclusion

Your link profile should appear as natural as possible so vary the good links as much as possible and avoid the bad links. Collect links from as many sources using as many tactics as possible and use keyword variants in your anchor text. By following these guidelines you should be able to improve the appearance of your link profile and, therefore, improve your search engine rankings.

Many people who have websites are not totally up to date with what is considered to be search engine spamming. Having worked on search engine optimisation for a few clients, I have come across websites that are using spam techniques to help elevate search engine rankings. When I confronted clients about this, they honestly did not know they were using a form of spam nor did they realise the consequences if detected by the search engines.

So what is search engine spamming? A simple definition would be; deliberately designing website pages that offer poor and irrelevant content, and are used to trick search engines into ranking the content highly for inappropriate search results.

People tend to use spam as a way of attracting as many visitors to their website. When caught by the search engines, this will result in a major setback to business. Websites will be blacklisted from the search engines and chances are they will not appear in the index for a very long time.

Not sure if you are spamming? Below are a few common forms of spam techniques that you should avoid.

Doorway Pages Optimising a single webpage to perform exceptionally well in search engine ranks for a group of keyword phrases (keyword stuffing on the webpage). Once a user clicks on the link, they will be automatically redirected to a completely different website.

Invisible Text Using text that is not visible to the human eye (having the same colour text as the background colour). The invisible text will usually contain a large number of keywords (keyword stuffing).

Link Farms Joining community websites that provide large volumes of irrelevant links to your website.

Along with other forms of spam, these techniques should be avoided at all costs. If you are not sure whether your site uses some form of spam, then it would be best to contact a search engine optimisation specialist before it could result in your website being blacklisted.

Past clients who were using some form of spam and were not aware of it, had taken a big loss by having their website blacklisted in some search engines. The road to recovery can take very long and it is one that no one would like to follow. Be cautious!

While there may be some truth to the old adage that you cannot judge a book by its cover, you certainly can judge on article on the Internet by its title. With this in mind, if you are keen on achieving article marketing success, you will want to come to utilize the six secrets to creating fantastic titles for your articles.

• Keep your titles simple. Do not clutter your titles up with unnecessary words.

• Use the least complex words in your title. Do not use million dollar words when simple ones will do.

• Make sure your titles do not contain grammatical errors or typos. You would be utterly surprised about how common these mistakes are when it comes to Internet copy and content.

• If you are writing search engine optimized copy, you will want to make certain that you utilize appropriate keywords and keyword phrases in the titles to your articles themselves.

• Do not be "cute or clever" when it comes to writing titles for your articles as part of your article marketing efforts. What might seem to be cute and clever to you very well may awful to a potential reader. You might completely turn someone off before they've even read a single word of your article.

• With the last point in mind, it can be helpful to have someone else read your title (as well as your article for that matter) before you make the article available publicly. Such a person may be able to point out flaws in your article that you were unable to catch or notice on your own.

With the effects of Google's Orion wiping out duplicate content and content spam, it may indeed be time to shift your article marketing from mass submissions back to selective ones. Search engine experts already called it: Google is in so many words, giving the glory back to niche-focused web sites that speak to humans as opposed to robots.

To make your own judgement call on the Google situation, read what Garrett Rogers had to say on the matter back in April, then Google a few of your recent article marketing keyword efforts for the confirming evidence.

If you're a search engine prowler like I am, you may have noticed the change. Just four months ago you could submit one article to ten directories, Google-search the prime keyword search term, and discover a glorious broadcast of sloppily managed article banks revealing your article title at the top of the Google results page. But now, it's all come undone. Keyword terms have been returned to their proper owners-- longstanding businesses who have built niche-targeted, categorical web sites and spent years fortifying them with high-quality, intelligent content.

I have to wonder how many small article directories hell-bent on the bragging rights that come with search engine prominence, are now throwing in the article marketing towel altogether. If the reality of Orion hasn't hit them yet, perhaps it will very soon. Granted, I'd be hard-pressed to call myself a search engine optimization expert. But as an astute observer, that's what the writing on the wall is saying to me.

Despite the Google algorithm shift, article marketing is still very much a viable way to get your business before the eyes of targeted prospects; now moreso than ever. Thanks to Google, and barring unforseen circumstances, it's been arranged that the content publishers who are in it for the long haul will prevail. And so, the question on everybody's minds: what to do with your article marketing campaign?

Some Tips from a Strategic Article Marketer:

1. Target your niche. Focus on building a library of tightly-focused content in one category. Write one or two articles each month, and publish them exclusively on your own Web site.

2. Save it for your ezine. Articles will always be a source of interest for your readers and fans. If you haven't started building a list yet, now's the time. Ezines build trust and they're the foundation of your client base.

3. Duck the dupe content penalty. Mass article submissions hold no clout now, as far as I can see. Shift your energy from mass submissions to selective ones. Focus on the Best, not the most.

4. Remold old content. All the article marketing articles I wrote are heading toward obsolete and in need of reworking. How's your content looking? Take another look at your previously published articles and repackage/remold for reuse in a new form.

5. Join article communities. EzineArticles.com serves as an info authority and promises a free education on any number of topics. Publish articles regularly here as a testament to your expertise.

6. Network with other article authors. If your previous goal was to get your articles in the Google spotlight, your new strategy should be to shine among fellow article submitters.

7. Swap ezine articles. Strengthen your bonds with top quality content producers in related niche categories. Advertise an article swap for two times the exposure.

8. Be niche-selective. You'll likely start to see a shift from "generic" article banks, to topic-focused, which is the way that it should be. An example: GoDaddy's new article site, DomainInformer.com. Write original, exclusive articles for specific, targeted sites like these.

9. Stick to natural linking. Natural links are ones that further the reader experience by providing more information; for example to a resource. Artificial ones are self-serving to the content publisher only and will put a crimp in your search engine effort.

Article directories will continue to serve as an amazing free resource for anyone wishing to market a Web site. This fact alone keeps article marketing high on my list of Great Things You Can Do For Your Internet Business. I will continue to contribute my knowledge in the form of article submissions, as will I keep on reading and learning from my fellow article marketers. I suggest you do the same.

Viral marketing is a methods of list building

There are multiple methods of list building, and if you are just getting started, until you have gained mastery over one or two methods, it is advisable to use multiple methods of list building strategies. You’ll see every step of the process, no matter how small, in exacting detail so

Anyone who has a website knows how important it is to generate as much traffic as possible to draw in potential clients. This is what Internet marketing is based upon. Without website traffic you will not generate sales and your business will fail.

It is the website owners responsibility is to drive traffic to a website. The main tool that he or she uses are search engines such as Yahoo or Google. Advertising can be effective, however it is very expensive. When you use a search engine, you can only those consumers who are interested in your product for a fraction of the cost of advertising.

When you have visibility on a search engine, your website is being seen by millions of people who are looking for your product. Many website owners do not understand that this is what drives traffic to their site. Having a great website is wonderful, however it will do no good if you do not have traffic. There are common mistakes that many website owners make that are costing them traffic every day.

Misuse of Keyword

Keywords are the most important part of your site. Choose your keywords very carefully as they are what will direct traffic to your site from search engines. If you choose the wrong keywords you will get very little traffic.

Repetitive Keywords

You may think that using the same keywords repeatedly will get you listed more often, but in reality, the search engines will lower your standing or skip your site altogether. Using keywords repeatedly is called keyword stacking and it is not recommended.

Stealing from competitors websites

Whether it is on the Internet or not, stealing is wrong. Despite what friends or colleagues tell you, it is not acceptable to Borrow icons, text or even whole pages from another website. Search engines are designed with a feature that can find any type of duplications. If you have been found to have Borrowed from another website, you risk being banned from listing your website by search engines altogether.

Unrelated keywords can get you banned

There are may people who think that they can drive traffic to their website by using Keyword that are unrelated to the product that they offer. They choose the most popular keywords on the Internet today that have proven to drive traffic to websites. They do this on the premise that with these keywords, their visibility will increase and people will view their site. This is not only unethical, it is also considered to be spam. The website owner can hide the keyword in a Meta tag, and they will not be noticed. Search engines will find them, and in some instances, the website can be banned for search engine listing.

Keyword stuffing.

Keyword stuffing is similar to keyword stacking. The only difference is that the website owner uses an alt=HTML parameter. When the search engine discovers that the keyword text does not describe the contents of your website, the consider it to be spam and your site will be eliminated from the search engine.

Hidden Text

Many website owns will hide their keywords within their text. This is also highly unethical. They think that of they set their keywords to the same color and background of their web page. They think that the keyword become invisible, when in reality, nothing gets by a search engine.

Tiny Text is also unethical

Tiny text is just as unethical as hidden text. Tiny text is done by reducing the text size until it is barely readable. Again you cannot hide tiny text from search engines, they find any abnormality.

Assuming all search engines are the same.

There are a lot of people who are still under the impression that there are rules that all search engines have to adhere to. The fact is, that each search engine has their own rules of conduct that they go by and can amend them any time they choose to. It is crucial for website owners to research the requirements for high visibility for each search engine.

Free web hosting is not for serious businesses

When you are serious about driving traffic to your website through search engines, it is important not to use free web hosting companies. Search engines will remove pages that are using free web hosting.

Missing elements from your web pages

Double check your web pages to make sure that there are no missing links and that the graphics are complete. This can be difficult at times, however there are companies on the Internet that will assist you some even at no charge.

Your Internet business is your livelihood. By following these steps, you are ensuring that you will not be banned from search engines or be given the reputation of a spammer.

It may be tempting to try unethical methods, but in the end you will be caught and all the months of work trying to get your website noticed will only get it noticed for the wrong reasons. By taking the time to research what is acceptable and what is not is will aide in the success of your internet business by driving the traffic that you want to your site.
